Outcome and audience
For analysts choosing a valid grouping or filter for a provider cost question.
Before you begin
A connected source must have completed data and publish the requested dimension as available.
Where to go
Open Spend Explorer and inspect the provider-derived dimension choices.
Complete the workflow
Keep the selected workspace, provider, period, currency, cost basis, and data-through date visible as you work.
- Start with account, project, subscription, or organization scope.
- Move to service, SKU, meter, line item, or pricing category.
- Use resource, tag, workspace, model, or API-key detail only when available.
- Check coverage and unallocated values before assigning ownership.
Interpret the result
Unavailable means the source did not provide enough identity. It does not mean the value is zero or safe to redistribute.
Loading, empty, partial, and unavailable states
Loading preserves the current scope. Empty means no records match the authorized scope. Partial or stale data keeps its completed-through boundary visible. Unavailable or permission-denied states explain the missing prerequisite and never substitute zero or another provider.
Provider differences
Cloud sources emphasize billing hierarchy and infrastructure; AI and platform sources may emphasize organization, workspace, model, API key, or charge type.
Synthetic example
Illustrative example · synthetic data Example: an OpenAI cost report supplies project and line item but no API-key identity; PruneFox keeps API-key attribution unavailable.
Common mistakes
Do not assume every provider supports the same hierarchy or use tags as complete ownership without checking coverage.
